NYC Bites: Welcome hungry and cash-tight individuals

  1. The Halal Guys Food Truck
  2. Manting
  3. BCD Tofu House – Casual Korean restaurant chain

When attempting to find a lunch spot after purchasing your meal,  try to find clean and warm surroundings such as a food court. However, since we’re neither NYC natives nor did we have a lonely but warm cubicle, we settled for a walkway leading to an MTA subway stop, that provided us with shelter from the strong gales. I would recommend a more comfortable sit-down location, but clearly we were hungry, cold, and not in the right frame of mind. The cold certainly took away from the full experience of savoring the flavors from our $7+ USD chicken and gyro combo (Shared between the both of us and we still had some leftovers).

The combo was tasty, filling and spicy, honestly what more can you ask for!!! It’s certainly not too healthy. But then again, I’d like to think Hillary and I are simple folk and aren’t too concerned with the lack of greens (We made up for it in other meals!  I mean if you consider lettuce and tomato from a Shake Shack burger).

The day that we had skipped the MET to venture into Bloomingdales and stores on Fifth Avenue, we went for dinner at Manting’s (Sara’s recommendation). Manting’s is located close to Times Sqaure so it was convenient for us to walkover after. By now, you may have noticed a trend for Asian cuisine. Reasons being: Hillary was starved of asian food having spent her exchange program in Copenhagen. I love rice. And who could say no to dry hot pot?! I can’t recall what we ordered, but it was based on a weight system. We ordered a bunch of different meats and vegetables. Our food came out hot and spicy and in that moment, it was heaven on earth.

Credits and S/O to Hillary for the stellar photos!

Japanese eateries around Astor Place

After a day of non-stop window-shopping around SOHO, I was still sick, dehydrated, hacking up a storm and couldn’t find a convenient store in sight. We went into this modern, clean styled cafe, got rice pudding and a bottle of water. We were looking for potential eateries in the SOHO area but didn’t see any restaurants despite walking around for hours. We decided to  head east, back to our safe haunt, Astor Place, just because we knew we had several solid options of Japanese fare.

We decided to try out Kenka a restaurant our friend had recommended. Unbeknownst to us, the interior and exterior (we didn’t notice the provocative store display at the beginning as we were so starved of food) of the restaurant was filled with suggestive Japanese paraphernalia. The restaurant and some of the servers definitely seemed very edgy. It made for a very interesting experience.

On a separate occasion, before heading to UCB (Upright Citizen’s Brigade), an improv theatre club started by Amy Poehler, we dined at Oh Taisho. All the pictures are from our dinner at Oh Taisho. My personal faves were the Kimchi Udon-bottom left, and the Yaki Tori-Centre.

#throwbackthursday: Vancouver Dine Out 2015

Market @ the Shangri-La with Cheryl! #tbt

Way back in January 2015, Dine Out Vancouver, Canada’s largest food and drink festival dishes up ways to enjoy the flavors of the city. The hundreds of restaurants throughout the city and in hotels creates delicious dining experiences, typically 3 course meals at more reasonable prices. It was also the weekend of Atesto and the huge Christian conference which was being held at Canada Place. Right after Atesto, I met up with Cheryl @ Market and had an intimate dining experience at my first Dine out!

The ambience at Market would be perfect for couples as the interior has minimal lighting simulating a romantic feel, very much dinner by candle-light, and warm. The service was excellent, with their very attentive waiters. I enjoyed the both appetizer and the dessert, scallop sashimi on rice, and a pineapple-based dessert which was somewhat of a fusion combination with a unique twist.

Refueling at Renzo’s

During Christmas time, we stumbled upon a quaint cafe on Commercial Drive while running some errands in the area. The huge glass windows and open concept caught our attention and were also instantly enamoured by the beautiful cakes on display.

London Fog @ 12pm, Carrot cake in the Center, and 2 cappuccinos @ 6pm & 9pm

The cafe also had a huge, hipster looking mason jar lemon water dispenser, which was fantastic!  I love the vibe at Renzos and it seems like a great study spot too. The london fog and cappuccinos didn’t disappoint either. Both my dad and sister agreed that the cappuccinos packed a punch (strong, intense)! Being a thrifty student, and human being in general, I thought that the carrot cake was a little more on the pricey side, but I definitely want to revisit Renzo’s again!

The Golden Mile on Commercial Drive

Way back in late October, a friend celebrated her 22nd birthday by attempting “The Golden Mile”, in tribute to the movie “The World’s End“. The Golden Mile is an odyssey, more commonly known as a pub crawl, but entails having a drink in each of a dozen establishments.

The journey commenced at 6pm on a Sunday night on Commercial Drive in St. Augustine’s. I didn’t join the group till after church, which ended at 8.30 pm and had dinner at my comfort food- Chinese Restaurant, Congee Noodle House, (thank goodness i did!).

I arrived at Commercial Drive, fashionably late at 10 pm and walked from Commercial Station seven blocks up/down( depending on how you see it ) to a bar on East 1st Avenue. It’s embarrassing to admit that it was my first time exploring Commercial Drive in the time that I’ve been here. My trek through Commercial was mind-blowing as I found it to be such an eclectic neighborhood, the demographic being so multicultural and home to several ethnic eateries.

The Dime was the first establishment of the night for me and I was delighted to see Rachel, as I hadn’t seen her in the longest time.

After they’d finished their sliders, we went to The Charlatan which was my most favorite stop of the night. We ordered Caesar’s with a strip of bacon in it and it was THE MOST heavenly strip of bacon! I appreciated The Charlatan as it was bright, roomy,  and allowed for multiple viewings of whatever sports was on.

Next stop on The Golden Mile… is The Storm Crow Tavern. Being a fan of most things science fiction, fantasy and a bit of horror, I am thoroughly fond of this concept. It’s the Fanboy/ Fangirl’s ultimate dream pub. Their website enlightens you on their menu and they’re extensive menu of drinks inspired by television shows. I was very intrigued by the interior of the storm crow. Walls were decorated with extensive memorabilia of weapons, armors, autographs and little trinkets. It was crazy. We each did a round of random shots listed on this menu and it was amusing as we rolled the dice to determine our mystery drink (fate). I can’t remember which shot I got but it was not tasty! Although I do realize that I’m not the biggest fan of non-cocktail drinks(drinks with low sugar content). My shot might’ve been #2, The MacReady, which seems like the most harmless, innocent drink.

It’s Chambar for the birthday girl!

Happy belated birthday to the world’s coolest sister!

Situated in Gastown right by Cafe Medina, a popular breakfast spot, is Chambar, a Belgian restaurant. It was Sara’s birthday and a significant year for her, she mulled over an outing or a quiet birthday dinner with some friends & family. She narrowed it down to 3 options of either dining at Pidgin, The Flying Pig or Chambar and determined that Chambar was the place to be!

photo 1(1)

Since we’re both lightweights (strictly speaking for myself), and we weren’t keen on consuming too much alcohol that night,  Sara and I decided to split a glass of red wine. We sampled some of the other cocktails if I’m not mistaken,The Blue Fig (CAD$12),  and it was delicious!

Sara ordered the entree above, Fletan Et Pancetta (CAD$31),  which is Halibut topped with pancetta and a side of some greens. I was in the mood for a steaming pot of mussels cooked in tomato coconut cream, Congolaise (CAD$24), coupled by the fact that I’m on a student budget #thestruggleisreal. The entrees were good, but what stunned us was the dessert. The Nico 3.0 (CAD$10) was a wonderful fusion of sugary goodness. The cylindrical thin layer of crispy cornflake crunch enclosed around carmelized white chocolate ice cream, apple and corn was a real treat!

If you’re in the neighborhood, Chambar is a terrific place to pop by providing a unique dining experience.

Coast, Vancouver

We recently had lunch at Coast, a well known establishment located along Alberni Street where you can also find Black+Blue, Thierry and Italian Kitchen. The service was excellent, the food offerings are diverse and easy on the pocket, and the space is large yet thriving with energy.

The food menu offers a fusion of cuisines. The Wrap Box (CAD$13.95) comes with tuna sashimi, a shrimp wrap and new england clam chowder. There are flatbreads such as Truffled Brie (CAD$15.95), and Smoked Salmon (CAD$15.95), with hot sides Crispy Garlic Fried Calamari (CAD$12.95); as well as light bites like Tuna Goma-ae (CAD$15.50) and Spicy Ahi Tuna Roll (CAD$11.95).

If pasta is your thing, the Tagliatelle Vongole (CAD$14.95) will not disappoint. It impresses with a good handful of clams and makes for a filling lunch if sushi feels too light or Calamari too heavy.

Among the other restaurants in the area, Coast offers an eclectic menu, perfect for any starving yet indecisive individuals.  Since Coast is located in the heart of Downtown Vancouver, it might be quite tricky to get a table during the lunch hour. Coast opens till late, so it’s perfect to stop by after a full day of work, shopping or a snack before hitting the town.
